"Hubble on Golden Hummock"

2001/03
Watercolor on watercolor paper
9" x 12"
Currently in private collection.

This was my first watercolor painting. It is a copy of a painting from Duane R. Light's book, "Watercolor". I modified the original by adding the mountain range and dead tree in the foreground and by adding more details. I entered it into a local art show and won 1st place in the watercolor division! I don't know if that says that this piece was liked by the judge or that the other entries were really bad! It still felt good to win something even though I did copy the majority of the painting from another painting. But being that it was my first watercolor painting, it was more of an experiment than an attempt to pass off another's work as my own. The piece is clearly derivative of the original but different in many ways. I am extremely aware, perhaps hyper-aware, of the issues relating to copyright and never intentionally steal another's idea and pass it off as my own. If I do copy, at least I make it known from where I copied.

This was a gift to my parents who are now enjoying their retirement.
