"Big Mamma"

2004/04
Acrylic and graphite on illustration board

Currently in private collection.

This was my fourth portrait. It is of my grandmother on my mother's side. I think they used to call her "big mamma" because she was a fairly large woman (taller than my grandfather). I used a photograph similar to one that I used when painting my grandfather and I did not use a full range of tones for this one either because I wanted it to match the other one in style. The painting took me approximately two weekends to complete.

Although the style is similar, you can see how my ability to create details has improved since my first portrait. The hair, the eyes and the glasses all exhibit more control and consequently improve the quality of the painting. Below are a couple of detail shots so you can see some of these areas up close.

Here's a closer shot of the eyes. My hands aren't too steady when I take these pictures so there is always an element of fuzziness but hopefully you can see enough to tell that there are plenty of details present.

This is a close up shot of some of her hair. Notice the stray strands near the bottom. Now that's splitting hairs!
